South Carolina permits at state level through SCDES: $150 site evaluation, permit valid five years, Tier 3 installers may self-inspect. Georgia permits at county level: 20-day decision window, permit valid 12 months, and a mandatory county inspection before backfill on every job. Georgia also requires two-compartment tanks and adds 50 percent capacity for a garbage grinder.

The permit validity difference is the big one. Five years in South Carolina versus twelve months in Georgia completely changes how you phase lots. A South Carolina permit can sit through a market slowdown. A Georgia one expires and you start again.
Second: the Georgia inspection before backfill is a hard dependency on your schedule. South Carolina's Tier 3 self-inspection provision removes that dependency entirely on our jobs, which is worth real days.
Get a soil evaluation before closing on either side. SCDES states plainly that not all property is suitable for a septic system. The cost of the evaluation is trivial against the cost of a parcel you can't build on.
A South Carolina licence does nothing for you in Georgia. Georgia does not recognise out-of-state certifications, and it certifies both the company and the individual. If your job is in Georgia, ask specifically for Georgia credentials. If it's in South Carolina, ask what tier they hold, because Tier 1 cannot legally repair an existing system and Tier 2 cannot touch an engineered design.
The Fall Line runs through Augusta, so geology changes as much as regulation does. North and west, Piedmont clay and larger drainfields. South and east, Coastal Plain sand and water table constraints. Two properties fifteen minutes apart can need entirely different systems.
